Lapskaus Boulevard. Norwegian Brooklyn revisited
Did you know that just as many Norwegians have lived in New York City as now live in Kristiansand? Or that there was a small Norwegian community in the American metropolis where you could buy fish balls and brown cheese at the local delicatessen and eat meatballs and fårikål (Norwegian lamb stew) at the restaurants? Many street corners were abuzz with Norwegian dialects and there was a Norwegian newspaper and radio program as well as scores of churches and organizations. Today, Brooklyn’s Norwegian colony is history, but it lives on in people’s memories, stories and photos.

The book “Lapskaus Boulevard” takes you back to the Norwegian colony in Brooklyn in the period 1945-1975. Hundreds of photographs provide a glimpse of the everyday lives of Norwegian immigrants: how they lived and worked and what they did in their spare time and on festive occasions. The book also takes you on a tour of the Norwegian Main Street – 8th Avenue or “Lapskaus Boulevard” – with its Norwegian stores and service establishments such as Sørlandet Restaurant, Pettersens Bakeri and The Nightcap.
